On Thursday afternoon we had a visit from the Christchurch City Council Animal Control Team and their dog Baxter who taught us about how to be safe around dogs.
We learnt that if a dog's on it's own we leave it alone.
We also got taught how to use our school bags to help defend ourselves if a dog ever came up to us aggressively.
We also learnt how to be responsible dog owners. Part of this involves picking up the dog's poo and disposing of it the right way, making sure dogs have enough exercise, are kept safely enclosed and that they have food, water and shelter.
The last thing that was talked about was how to pat a dog if we saw one.
- Stand back at a safe distance and ask the owner if it is ok to pat the dog
- Listen to what the owner says
- Approach the dog with our hand formed into a rock
- Move our hand to the dog's chest and open our hand up to pat the dog
