Brr it's cold.... Let's discover winter

It really has been cold lately!  Jack Frost has been visiting us quite frequently and gumboots, jackets, hats and gloves have been a morning necessity!  Today's poem was titled "Jack Frost".  The children did really well being word detectives and finding all the pairs of rhyming word in the poem.  Please take a moment over the weekend and enjoy this fun poem together.

We spent some time today discovering about winter, creating winter-themed creations.  We also had a go at doing "scribble drawings", we even made a giant scribble drawing on one of the tables and we all had a go at colouring it in.  It was fun creating a piece of art together!

School Disco

A great time was had by all grooving away at the school disco tonight!  It was fantastic seeing everyone with such happy smiling faces.  There was certainly a lot of excitement in the room!

A massive thank you to all the hard working members of the PTA who put in a huge amount of time and energy into making this night such a success!

Here are some photos from the night.  I tried to get everyone, apologies if I missed anyone!

Dog Safety

On Thursday afternoon we had a visit from the Christchurch City Council Animal Control Team and their dog Baxter who taught us about how to be safe around dogs.

We learnt that if a dog's on it's own we leave it alone.

We also got taught how to use our school bags to help defend ourselves if a dog ever came up to us aggressively.

We also learnt how to be responsible dog owners.  Part of this involves picking up the dog's poo and disposing of it the right way, making sure dogs have enough exercise, are kept safely enclosed and that they have food, water and shelter.

The last thing that was talked about was how to pat a dog if we saw one.
- Stand back at a safe distance and ask the owner if it is ok to pat the dog
- Listen to what the owner says
- Approach the dog with our hand formed into a rock
- Move our hand to the dog's chest and open our hand up to pat the dog

Matariki

We have been learning about Matariki - The Māori New Year.

This year Matariki will be on Thursday 18th June.

We have been looking at how it is celebrated and the stories behind how Matariki (a constellation of stars) were formed.

Check out the video we watched that told one story of how Matariki was formed

We also had fun checking out this neat interactive
